Competitive intelligence for product managers: a weekly playbook

Product managers need competitive context to make roadmap calls, but not a second job. A short weekly routine keeps you informed without turning you into a full-time analyst.

Product managers make dozens of decisions a week that depend on what competitors are doing. Yet most competitive intelligence is aimed at sales. Here is a routine built for product.

Monday: what shipped

Spend fifteen minutes on competitors' changelogs and release notes from the past week. For each meaningful launch, note:

  • what it does, in one sentence;
  • who it is for;
  • whether it overlaps with something on your roadmap.

Ignore minor fixes. Focus on capabilities your buyers would notice.

Wednesday: what customers say

Check what buyers say about competitors on review sites and in your own sales notes. Look for repeated praise or complaints. Review sites often reveal the gap between a competitor's marketing and its product.

Friday: what it means for the roadmap

Once a week, ask:

  1. Did anything change that affects a decision we are about to make?
  2. Is a competitor moving towards a segment we care about?
  3. Is there a gap we could close faster than they can?

Write one line in your decision log for anything that changes a priority, and why.

Keep evidence, not opinions

Roadmap debates go better with evidence. When you cite a competitor's capability, link to the source and note the date. "They launched X on this date, here is the changelog" settles arguments that "I think they have X" starts.

Do not build a copy

Competitive intelligence is input, not a roadmap. Matching every competitor feature leads to a product that is a worse version of several others. Use competitor moves to understand the market, then decide what is right for your customers.

Share upwards and sideways

  • Tell product marketing about launches that affect positioning.
  • Tell sales enablement about capability gaps reps should prepare for.
  • Bring patterns, not single items, to leadership.

VeoCue collects competitors' launches and product changes with sources and dates, filtered to your Product's market, so the weekly read takes minutes.

See it on your own competitors.
